Expressive Means and Visual Ideologies from 1970s to 1980s

In recent years the notion of “visual ideology” has been adopted as a focus in Italian art history of the XXth Century. This perspective has neither meant to dismantle stylistic, formal and iconographic approach nor to avoid a philology of images and texts.
Rather it has aimed to provide a new way to view the complex relationship between artistic production and society; a relationship which inevitably leads art history to cross path with other fields of studies, not only those with which it is traditionally aligned, such as art criticism and exhibition or museum studies, but also with social and political history or, more broadly, with the visual studies and mediated nature of artistic production.
This issue of Palinsesti will aim to reframe Italian art from the late 1970s and the 1980s, through a multidisciplinary lens that merges such fields as social history, the study of artistic and visual practices, the study of literature, and music, as well as the new philosophical paradigms of that time.
From this perspective, the crucial transition from 1978 to 1989 will be reconstructed through a plurality of sources, which should avoid the usual categories of historiography (a “return to painting”, Trans-avantgarde, Postmodernism, etc.). In contrast, we invite scholars to discuss the aesthetics of a so-called cultural riflusso (“reflux”, or “backward surge”) – if there ever was a phenomenon defined this way – by focusing on two main areas:
1) a visual and ideological analysis of artworks, realized in Italy from 1978 until 1989, in order to enlighten their (explicit or implicit) political and sociological stances;
2) the analysis of the diverse means of representation (not only artistic) and the development of specific imagery in the 1980s, especially imagery that was fed by contemporaneous critical readings, stylistic revivals and/or cultural trends.
